Hi there, we just adopted a 4 year old healthy black lab. We are considering getting pet insurance for him.* I would love any input about your experiences with pet insurance, if you think it is a worthwhile investment, and which plans are best.* Thanks!

Can't help you with the plans but one thing about pet insurance is that it is reimbursed meaning whatever the cost of the vet is you have to pay that up front and then file the paperwork with the insurance company. So if the bill will be say 3000 you have to have that upfront. You would be better off probably putting the monthly plan fee in a savings account. If you don't have to use it you have saved a bit of money.

So what happens to your dog if suddenly your faced with a 3500.00 vet bill? If you have plenty of money you probably need not answer. But if your like the general public , an unexpected 2500-3500 vet bill could do some serious damage to most people . Heck , not even that much , a 1400 dollar vet bill for some people can mean the difference between paying next months mortgage/rent or spending it to fix your pup.

I posted in another thread here about pet insurance. I'll have to track down my post though. Cliffs note version - I think pet insurance is a horrible idea from a financial standpoint. It just doesn't make any sense financially.

Here's the link I was talking about - http://www.dogforums.com/19-first-time-dog-owner/51722-new-here-getting-new.html
