Instead of pet insurance have you consider simply every month putting $20 (roughly what pet insurance costs monthly) aside in a savings account, then if an emegency does come you take money from the bank account? That way if nothing ever happens you dont lose any money and you can continue it for every dog you have. If something does happen, the money is there. It may be wise to begin by depositing a larger sum so you dont start with a mere $20 and can make it grow faster. Teh best part is thanks to interest you will even be increasing the money!

I don't know about the US but my UK insurance policy does NOT cover things like shots and spaying. Only illness and accident. You would need to shop around to see what different policies cover. Or do the $20-in-a-pot-each-month thing.

Anyways.... how are things going with little Pepperoni? :D

I have VPI and for about $135 dollars I am covered up to 8,000 a year with a $50 deductable. I view this as catastrophic insurance, and don't put any claims in for minor stuff. A few days a a local Vet Emergency room, and seeing people have bills for $1,000s of dollars for one injury or illness convinced me that this was a smart choice.

If you are going to put away $20 a month and never touch it it would take 33 years to save up 8,000 dollars....

Is that $135 a year or a month?? Mine is £12 a month and covers up to £4,000 per illness, with £1m third party accident insurance.

I have pet plan for my dogs. I dont know if it is available in other countries though. Bearla especially is actually on a higher level of insurance than our other animals due to the health issues that she has

VPI > *

What I dont like about them is that they refund 80% of what THEY think is the "standard national average price" for each procedure. So if you paid $1,000 at the vet you are expecting $800 back, but they tell you that according to the chart they are only going to refund 80% of, lets say, $650

Thats kinda weak, but better than nothing.

You were saying that the pup is 8wks old?
hon please do the pup a favor especially given the type of dog that it is, DONT TAKE IT OUT YET IN PUBLIC AROUND YOUR AREA. The reason that i say this is because dogs need to be isolated for until at least 2 wks after the shots have been given. They are susceptable to all forms of infection and disease until then. Pups should not even be leaving their mom until they are 12 wks by rights. Please dont take this as a lecture, my best wishes are for the pup. I jsut dont want to see your angel sniffing around out on the streets and pick up an infection like parvo etc. the disease can be picked up on the grass, sidewalk etc for a min of two wks after body fluids have been cleansed away.

I am glad to see you love it so very very much though. CONGRATS ON PARENT HOOD.

We just took out insurance on our new puppy Buddy. In June our beloved Cocker Spaniel Shadow got very sick and after 3 different hospitals, numerous vets and an abundance of tests Shadow was diagnosed with a brain dicease and we had to put him down - only 6 years old. Our vet bill just for this came to almost $6,000. We also had to have his knee ligiments replaced a few years prior to the tune of $2,000. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining and would spend the money again to have our Shadow back. When Buddy came into our life just before Christmas we discussed insurance with our vet and signed up right away. I'm writting this from work so I don't have my paperwork and don't remember the name of the company but it was around $36 per month. Let's hope we never have to use it.

I have Petplan insurance. I insured my dog and 2 cats for $300/year for up to $8000 in vet bills. It's accident/illness insurance only...no vaccines or routine care. I think it's worth it for my own piece of mind. God forbid anything should happen, but I'm covered if it does.:D

I am also looking and was thinking of VPI..But after reading about how they figure out standard payment policy I do not know.

for me for the Advanced it is $326 per yr....But Ill be damned if their 80 or 90% is not equal to what my Vet would charge,,Screw them and their Standard..That's like me going to my Dr or Dentist and him being paid from my Union then me having to dish out 30%..Yet I am suppose to have full coverage.

Pet Plan or ASPCA do they do the same..I would get a quote but I do not want to give my Phone # address or e-mail to be hounded by these people with BS mail and advertisements

I think most insurances both for people and pet's have a normal and customary reimbursement rate. Many times , if you talk with the doctor or the vet, they will except that as payment in full. I can remember in the PPO I was in, them having to negotiate with the doctor to reach the final fee.

I dont understand what this stuff means, like what does it mean deductible, do they just reimburse you? I'm confused on this whole issue.

I think VPI beats most plans, and in addition is it is the largest provider of insurance. The deductable is only $50 as it covers up to $8,000 for around $135 a year.
