First off, I know that dogs pant to regulate their heat, I understand that fully.

My question is if big dogs generally pant more than smaller dogs.

Specifically, my 90 lbs long-haired Akita seems to be constantly panting, whether he is inside in the air conditioning or outside in the blazing heat.

As a general rule, larger dogs tend to have more trouble with heat dissipation than smaller ones, and will pant more. Heat radiation is a function of surface area; heat generation is a function of mass. As an animal gets larger, the surface area to mass ratio decreases, and heat tends to build up.

Oooh a physics lesson..cool! Interesting post..I didn't do too well in physics in school but that was well put.

Dogs also pant more if they are nervous, in discomfort or overwhelmed.
