What about Petco? How are they for animal treatment? I ask because my sister in law buys all her pets from there.. (including the guinea pig that we adopted from her :p ) They -seem- to be pretty caring about the animals, but how can you ever be sure?

It's not just petland, it's almost every if not every major chain pet store that sells puppies. Reputable breeders don't have litters often enough to supply their demand. Not only that, reputable breeders screen potential buyers and they can't do that if they're going through a pet store.

Its not so much about how they treat them, its about where they get them from. No responsible breeder would sell their animals to a petstore. Ever. Meaning that every petstore animal is from a mill or byb, not just the puppies and kittens. Hamsters, Rats, Guinea Pigs, Bunnies, all of them. Ultimately, the money you pay for the animal at Petco, is going to that mill or byb. By buying an animal from a petstore you are not "rescuing" them, you are simply opening another spot for the store to buy another animal from a mill or byb, thus giving them more money to breed more and more animals.

It is not only major chain pet stores it is also you local pet store or I should really say puppy store.

Example here: http://www.americanpuppyclub.com/about_our_kennel.shtml

This place has a local cable TV commercial that in there ad says new puppys arriving weekly. Now if you Google "American Puppy Club NJ" you will come up with a lot of links with complaints. The following link is just a small sample.

Here is another example:

Petco here is a disgrace to pet stores everywhere. I have never seen such horrible treatment of animals, and will be complaining to corporate in a bit.

I know that it's not just chain stores, I think OP just asked about chain stores though. And really you're best bet is going through a reputable breeder or a shelter/rescue.

Every store is different with different people running them. I was in a petco where I questioned management. But I got to say, not being biased here....but the Petco I work at is awesome. Its clean, the animals are healthy and taken care of very well and if something goes wrong, they are taken to vet asap. Judge by store, not by company.

Our local Pet Land just closed down because they were proven to have dogs from puppy mills. Not sure how anyone was really surprised. I don't trust any "pet store" that has a constant supply of designer dogs and small breed dogs.

The horror tales I could tell you about the PetSmart I worked at, the ones I did guest spots in, and the people who pet owners trust their animals to in grooming salons.
