8 week old puppy seems to hate going into crate at night. It's only been the last couple of nights. She has a crate downstairs and one in our bedroom. She will happily wander in and out of crate downstairs and often goes in there to sleep. I make sure she is worn out before taking her up to bed, and has been for a wee. Once I get her upstairs she desperately doesn't want to go in crate, even with a raw hide chew I have to hold her in to shut the door. Cue several minutes (less than 5) of whining and yapping before falling fast asleep for the night.
Am I scarring her for life or impacting on eventually getting her to stay happily in her crate downstairs when we go out? Really eager to do things right but we are doing well with housetraining etc and don't want to mess things up.

Only 5 minutes of whining? That's pretty good for a brand new puppy...It is normal for them to whine, sometimes for hours, when they are learning about the crate.

There are a number of things you can do to get your pup to really like the crate. It sounds like yours is already pretty accustomed to it, though! Did her breeder/foster do some crate training? You can smear some peanut butter in a Kong and give that to your pup when she has to be in the crate for a while. The chewing/licking is very calming to puppies. Be careful with rawhide, it can be a choking hazard. Feed the puppy all her meals in the crate. Look up 'crate games' on this forum. To lure her into the crate, try using a hot dog or something else really yummy, like a little piece of cheese. I don't like forcing dogs into their crate. Luring is better.

I don't think they had but we've had it set up from day 1 and we're able to do the whole throwing treats in and putting her in whenever she was sleepy and stroking her. We feed her in her crate downstairs as well. We just need to progress to door closed to leave her in there.
