I adopted a dachshund and was told he is a mini. I took him to the vet they say he's definitely purebred. He is only 11 weeks old tomorrow and already 6.1 lbs. I have heard from others that their minis were like 3 lbs at this same age! Surely by the time he is done growing he will not be within the weight range of a mini right?? When does their growth rate slow down or when do they become more predictable of their final size?

Smaller dog breeds do tend to stop growing sooner than larger ones, but it does sound like your boy will be larger than average for the breed. It could be he has standard dachshund in his genetics, or he may just be a throwback, hard to know without having any info on the breeder. I have a "mini" poodle myself who's oversized - he was a rehome, but according to the paperwork we got with him his mom was a toy, dad a mini. I highly suspect that either the parental information is wrong, or dad had standard in him somewhere down the line.

@Knute, you might be interested to learn that there's even a third, smaller size - the rabbit dachshund. They're not recognized in the US or UK, but they are under the FCI (international federation for showing and breed standards used by many countries worldwide).

@DaySleepers I kinda figured he would be closer to standard size which is ok just a bit disappointing when I always wanted something closer to 12 lbs or less. I don't have any paperwork but I saw the parents and i thought they were like about tweenie size dad a little smaller then mom. I just hope he doesn't end up being like 30 lbs haha

From the AKC standard, Minis are supposed to be under 11 pounds as adults, while Standards are typically 16 to 32 pounds as adults.
