Hi! I have a new 1-2 year old rescue dog that I've had for 4 days. She is a 12 lb Doxie mix who just recovered from heartworm, but has completed treatment. For a dog that young, she sleeps almost all day. If we're not walking, she's sleeping. I'm not sure if I should be relieved she's so calm, but it seems to be excessive for a dog that young. Any thoughts?

I'd talk to the rescue or shelter she came from about what they observed and then a vet. It's a good idea to get to a vet for an introductory exam with any new dog. Maybe she's just a very calm dog, maybe the combined effects of the last of the heartworm treatment and a new home are affecting her, but it never hurts to have an exam and discuss concerns for any adoptee and in this case someone familiar with heartworm dogs.

If she was crated all day and all night, maybe she needs you to play with her a bit, show her life can be interesting and more than sleeping in a crate.
Yes, she's engaged when we play and then hops right back into her bed. I haven't had a dog this young for years but don't remember my previous ones sleeping this much at such a young age. I will see what they vet says.

Just curious, has there been any improvement? (I know many dogs are a bit lethargic and "off" when first adopted, just curious if that was the issue and if she's gotten sorted out)

Thanks for asking! She seems to be coming out of her shell and more curious about the house, like following us around which is new for her and good. I think it is just adjustment issues. When I first got her, she'd go right into her crate after a walk. then it was the dog bed on the couch. Now she's more curious and doesn't just stare at us when we throw toys, she will make a run for it. She is such a great dog and was probably just freaked out. Today she actually let a stranger pet her which is huge. Will still have vet check her out, but thinking it was just adjustment anxiety.

That's great to hear! I'm glad to hear she's already settling in, and wish you the best of luck in your years together! :)

You mean she had heart worm and the treatment for it, right? It said on the internet after treatment little activity for the dog. I would call my vet. It seems she needs to rest. Plus she is rescue and has that trama. I would like a calm, comforting voice and a soothing petting would be all she is up for. Again I emphasize calling your vet.

Yes, she had previous heartworm treatment and it's complete. There are no more restrictions on her activity level. She's been much better that last couple days and her quirky personality is coming out, but am still having my vet check her out. Thanks!
