He's new and will have to learn everything.
1. You just brought him home, he has to get used to things.
2. He's young from a rescue, and probably never stayed in a house. He will eventually explore more.
3. You are the only stable thing in his current world, you provide security ... for the next two months.
4. I don't know about him stepping in between you and other dogs. I could understand if he stood behind you. You might sit on the ground to play with him and with the other dogs, to help him understand that everything is Ok. When he sees you play with the other dogs, he may slowly gain more confidence and join in the play...
