Hello Everyone,

First a little background. We've had a female terrier mix, named Rosie, for about two years now. We decided to get her a play companion so we got a male terrier mix named Buddy about 2.5 months ago. We started out keeping him in his own room when we were at work and he would stay in there at night. After a month or so we decided he could sleep with us but he would still stay in his room when we were at work. He never had any accidents in the house and things were great.

About 3-4 weeks ago I noticed some dried pee on the leg of one of our couches. I figured we maybe just didn't let him out quick enough and didn't worry about. A few nights later I noticed he almost started pooping in our dining room and I stopped him and took him outside. Shortly after that he started marking on furniture, doors, right in front of us......even after we just let him outside. We took him to the vet and his urinalysis was fine and they had us try one of those pheremone things. He was fine for almost a week but then it started up again. When we got up in the morning we noticed a big puddle of pee in the room leading to where we take him outside. I also noticed that a lot of times we let him outside he would go out on the patio, and lay down.......wouldn't go walking around or go to the bathroom. I always let them out long enough. I also made sure to clean up any pee in the house with Nature's Miracle to prevent re-soiling. He rarely went in the same spot twice except for the room leading outside.

Any ideas? It partially seems like I need to re-train him to use outside to go potty but there is also the marking issue I feel we need to work on. If I take him for a walk, the first time he marks is rather long and then after that he marks on almost anything he can. I read some people saying not to let him mark too much and then I also read other things saying to allow him to mark as much as he wants outside as it'll prevent the need inside.

What to do? Thanks!

I allow marking outside. I don't really see a difference between peeing and marking, as long as both happen outside. Kabota doesn't do either inside the house.

How old is Buddy? Is he neutered? What did the vet check for? Did that include diabetes, water diabetes, and thyroid?

If it's not medical, I would just retrain from scratch. You can also buy belly bands, that might be helpful to you.

I just brought a doberman into my house who was doing the same thing the dobbie is a year and a half. Not every time he marked yet every time I caught him I told him no and put him directly outside than from outside into his crate, for 5-10 minutes. It worked in about two weeks, new dogs should not remain unsupervised in your home, you cant catch him every time but when you do it counts!!

I'd start from scratch. Keep him in your sight at all times. If you can't watch him closely, those are the times he should be confined in a crate or pen. That way, you will see when he need to go out. Then, develop a schedule.

I know, it's a hassle. But, it won't take forever, and it's better then cleaning up pee. Also, clean everything with an enzymatic cleaner so that you are "starting fresh" so to speak.
