Hi Everyone,

My wife finally broke down and is allowing us to adopt a puppy! We've been cruising through petfinder for about a week non-stop and looked at a few rescue places locally. On Sunday we saw a group of 4 puppies, 2 male and 2 female, and fell in love with one of the females. They're all being "fixed" on Friday and will be up for adoption on Saturday if all goes well. Of course the place is first come first serve so I'm hoping we can get there early enough to bring her home before anyone else can.

Anyway, thought I'd say hi and see if anyone can give me any pointers on raising a lab mix (other than what's in the stickies).

Thanks
Scott

Welcome to the forums. It's a great place to share and learn. Good luck with getting your puppy! If I were you, I'd go right when the shelter opens on Saturday.
Welcome to the forums. I don't have any general advice, but congratulations on your new puppy! Be sure to take plenty of pictures. :)
There is one rule here on DF that CANNOT be broken...pictures pictures pictures! ;)

Congradulations on the new puppy! It's not really a rule, but pictures would be great! I don't have any advice besides the usual puppy training. :D
Hi!....and Congratulations! I also adopted about 6 months ago --- My guy was just neutered when I got him -- he was 6 months.

How old are your pups? ....and what is the mix? I'm surprised that the shelter won't let you reserve your pup....you don't have to fill out an application form? If not.....Good Luck, I hope you get the pup you want.

The only advice I can give you ....is alot of love & patience --- use a happy voice when they do good --- and a firm voice when they do bad (but don't yell, they'll just become afraid of you)

My guy knows .....when my voice goes firm & I say "Bad Dog"....his ears perk, his eyes get big and he goes to the other side of the room and stares at me...until I say in my happy voice "Good Boy" and then he comes back running with kisses.:)
Generally it isn't a good idea to "fix" a dog until they are closer to a year old...
Val, every shelter and rescue organization I've come in contact with requires a dog to be spayed/neutered before going to its forever home. Whether or not the action is misguided is debatable, but the point is to keep more dogs from ending up in these places. I doubt the OP has an option.

This be true, FilleBelle, and I guess there isn't a good alternative, given the situation of pound puppies. Such is life....
Well, assuming all puppies are the "same" in this way...my advice is to have lots and lots of patience!

We got Abby when she was 6 weeks old and she's 14 weeks old now...she's adorable and so sweet (sometimes). :)

Good luck and can't wait to see pictures!!
γειά σου (hello in greek) welcome to df!
