we have a mellow cat 'Pepper' ... Pepper gets along real good with our 100+ pound lab/collie mix ...

when our puppy, 'Nika' approches Pepper all hyper Pepper lays down and lets the puppy MAUL her. but, some of the time Pepper just wants out and dosen't want to bother with Nika ... (I don't blame her) .....

Well how can I get Nika to be more mellow around Pepper?

I teach my dogs a "leave it" command. It is not just used for the cat, but it definitely works with the cat. Here is a video to give you a start.

thank you Inga .... i will watch the video .... my puppy is 8 weeks old and i am clicker training her .... she knows .... SIT, STAY (for about 5 seconds), COME, LAY DOWN, GIMME FIVE, TOUCH, FETCH (1/2 the time she brings it back) and she is good about LEAVE IT (impulse control) except with Pepper

rosborn, it sounds like you are on the right track. I am glad to hear your puppy is doing so well. Keep up the good work and have patience. Puppies are quite challenging. We look back later and laugh but getting through it can certainly give us the Grey hairs. lol

another quick question ~ I started Nika on her heart worm meds today!!! I feed her her normal food but added the med to her moist food!!! 2 hours later she puked her food up!! She has never puked in the two weeks that we have had her ~ it is Sunday and the vet is closed!

was she sensitive to the med?
is this normal for a puppy to do after taking the pill?
Should I give her another one to make sure she is covered?

As long as her energy is good and she's taking in water...I'd just wait and give the vet a call in the morning. I wouldn't give her another one until talking to the vet...as maybe its something in the med that isn't agreeing with her. Or maybe she just ate too fast and puked it up and it has nothing to do with the med...I'd just really call the vet when they are open and ask about it...unless she has other symptoms...then I'd look for an E-vet if you think its serious.
