Your dog isn't "bad," he's just being a dog. Dogs aren't born knowing what humans expect of them - it's up to us to teach them how we want them to behave.

The "permanent" solution is to teach a default leave-it.


However, teaching a default leave-it can take a lot of time and it takes a lot of practice for your dog to learn that leaving the thing it wants (eventually) gets it an even better thing. In the meantime, don't let him practice the unwanted behavior. Don't leave any food unattended where he can reach it. If you won't be able to watch the dog (or the food), put him behind a baby gate or in his crate if you use one, or lock him in a bedroom.
