Hi! I'm currently careing for a friends dog for some months and was told that he is an "outside dog". We took this as he is fine being outside while we're at work so he's not kept in a kennel all day..... This has turned out to not be the case as he seems scared of being outside even if it's only for a few minutes. This has aroused some problems with the people that live beside me. We would like to be able to have him outside during the day at night he sleeps in his kennel. And his owner just keeps telling he he never barks or whines when she had him....

We have but keeping him inside in a kennel all night and for 8 hours just seems mean. And due to he's not my dog letting him have free roam inside my house is not an option as both my partner and his owner dont want him wreaking walls or anything else (she has said he does chew on things even with toys for him to chew on instead)

Both of my dogs are crated while I am not at the house and while I am sleeping (7-10 hours) and as long as they are getting the stimulation and exercise that they need throughout the day I don't feel the least bit bad about crating them. They sleep the whole time they're crated.

If he slept I would be fine but I know he doesn't our ex roommate said he would whine a little even than. This isn't his only problem" he even whines if I put him out just so I can make supper ( and Haveing a big nosey dog be right beside me the entire time is just annoying as is the hair ending up in my food) and it's not for lack of play or cuddles he gets walked or a bike ride everyday and every other day the dog park and he's alowed through the house till bedtime

He is very likely scared by the new environment. If he was kept outside all the time before, odds are he is drastically undersocialized, on top of it, and this is scary stuff. Use the kennel for a while, give him some love and patience, let him have his kennel as a safe place and as he gains confidence with you, and gets more comfortable, I suspect the whinging will fall away.

I should have mentioned that I have had him now of a month and he has interacted with me sense she got him. And it's not a lacj confidence in me as he did know me very well before. Also his kennel was used as a punishment spot for him when she still had him so he isn't comfortable or "safe feeling" in it we are working to fix that and only use it as a sleeping area and were his toys are. His whining only starts if we leave him to do his busniss and to do things in the house aka get dressed make food or clean house. Or work I don't like leaveing him all day. Cooped up so he's hyper when I get home. I don't want him to be a complet outside dog only while I'm at work and on nice days

Are you giving your dog something to do in the crate? I always give my pup a toy that is only for her to play with when she's in crate. Of course, normally she sleeps in the crate but if she's being particularly noisy she gets a stuffed kong.

And he is not my dog I am only dog sitting but I don't need him causeing problems if I can't get his whining under some control she has to come get him there are already 10 dogs just in a 5 house area and I've already been asked to stop his whining... And that was when he was in the house

So, do you want a solution or not?

He's undersocialized and stressed out, and he's showing you that by crying. If you can't keep him, fine, but if you are going to keep him, you need to re crate train him to enjoy his crate, then crate him with a nice stuffed kong while you're gone. Google "crate games" for crate training ideas and "kong stuffing" for info on properly filling a kong to keep a dog busy.

It might seem mean to you to keep him in his crate all day, but what you're doing now is scaring him, so how is that not mean?
