Can anyone tell me what breed of dog this is? I've had two come into our dog rescue in the past month, they are almost identical---mottled gray mask on face, all four feet are mottled gray, body is black. One of them has a docked tail, the other does not. Both extremely athletic. People have identified them as Blue Heelers, but that's a name used to describe Austrailian Cattle Dogs, and they don't look like cattle dogs to me.... Any ideas?

Looks sort of like a border collie mix to me, or perhaps even Australian shepherd mixes, on account of the docked tail. It's not too uncommon to find either one of those breeds with those sort of markings. The other part could be anything, but definitely looks like some sort of sporting breed.

There are so many possibilities. Could be aussie or bc crossed with a cattle dog. Pointer mix, setter mix, spaniel mix... a lot of dogs come in heavily ticked patterns. Definitely not a purebred heeler, though.

For some reason that pic really really reminds me of a french brittany rather than a herding dog breed.

Here's a plain old border collie with heavy ticking:
