Ouch. If I were you I'd clip it off because if you leave it simply hanging on, your dog runs the risk of getting it caught on something and pulling it which would make things worse. I would cut it off but also have some cornstarch or styptic powder for any bleeding. Make sure to praise any acceptable behaviors so that in the future your pooch doesn't take a disliking to nail clipping.
Need advice about toenails....
My husband and my dog were clowning around today. My dog kind of fell off the couch and some how broke his toenail. It is broken and sticking up but still attached. It is obviously into the quick and looks painful. When I tried to touch it he yelped.... Should I just cut it off where it is broken or leave it and let it fall off on its own?

Whew... okay I cut it. It didn't bleed.. He survived.... Man I don't know what I'm going to do when I have a child and it gets hurt. I'm a nurse and I can barely take care of my own dog.....
LOL, no worries its ok to fuss over things like that.lol. The whinning probably put you on edge too, cut quicks hurt but its better to have a quick clip now than let it hurt over time until it decides to fall out.Whew... okay I cut it. It didn't bleed.. If it makes you feel better, I was playing chase with my doxie a couple months ago and he ran into my foot and cracked a nail. He screamed and wouldn't come near me.
