Hi everyone!
I just got my second Welsh Terrier in December, Cornelius is now about 3.5 months old and is calming down a bit with the chewing/biting and fighting with his slightly older wifey (hopefully haha) Zira who just turned a year old. Zira seemed really lonely while I was at work and was being quite destructive so I thought a little hubby companion would calm her down (which he did A LOT, I think she see's how needy and loud he can be and thinks "Geez, is that what I looked like? lol"). And if they have a couple litters of pups over the years great, I'll work hard to educate and find them good homes, or heck I'm young and single, we'll throw em in the pack haha. (Just an FYI my sole intent was NOT to just breed, not looking to make a ton of money or start a puppy mill, also my mother was a casual breeder of persian cats and several diff breeds of dog throughout my childhood so I am familiar with the process etc. I say this because I know people on forums can jump to conclusions and start judging/admonishing and sincerely want to avoid that..)
Anywho, I got Zira when she was a bit older, 3 months or so, and as far as I can remember she already had wire fur, though I was grieving at the time due to my mother's passing so might not have been THAT vigilant about such details. Cornelius is hitting what I call the awkward/gangly stage, where his legs and body seem to have doubled in size overnight while he still has a puppy head and sensibility haha. His coat is soft, and to be honest a bit dull. Zira has the most vibrant beautiful ginger color, while cornelius has dulled black and almost beige-ish soft fur that has a white silky sheen to it. I spoke with the breeder and she said this is totally normal and that Welshies "blow out" their soft puppy coat for the nicer wire coat. I just wanna confirm this bc as I said either it didn't happen with Zira, or it was much more subtle, or I was overwhelmed with other issues and nitpicking a coat haha (or all three). How long does this "blow out" last? Should I aid it along by using a harsh brush or shedding scrapers? Or just let it happen naturally?
Thanks in advance for any help. Cornelius is absolutely adorable and I just want him to have the beautiful resilient wire coat Zira has
