Friday I noticed him starting to whimper now and then when he would walk, thought it was his paw or leg. Saturday, he vomited all his food and water, and didn't each much.

Sunday, he still wouldn't eat, wasn't acting himself and noticed he would try to urinate multiple times outside, he also had an accident on the carpet Saturday which he never did before.

I took him to the ER Vets on Sunday morning. 3 hours and $500 later he told me my dog was urinating blood really bad. That they are treating it as a UTI but they didn't find any stones or bacteria in his urine. They gave me strong anti-biotics and pain medicene. He still won't eat, still trying to urinate multiple times with nothing coming out. He's still not himself, he doesn't want to leave my side.

I have another vet appointment this afternoon. My question is, could this be something more serious? Why would a vet treat this as a UTI if there is no bacteria? Anyone have any advice to help us?

I don't have any idea what could be wrong with him, but I think I'd get a second opinion. If what the vet says doesn't make any sense (which it really doesn't to me, either), I think I'd see another vet. Today.

I'm sorry for your boy's trouble and hope you find out what's going on.

Thank you, it's been a hard 3 days so far. I called the vet and they want to see him this afternoon, which is a different vet from the ER Vet that I was at.

He won't even eat his favorite treats, and the little he did eat I think was to try to please me, not out of hunger.

My other german shepherd was actually sniffing/trying to lick him in that area, it's like she knows something is wrong as well.

It's just so strange, upto friday he was full of energy, the only thing that seems strange thinking back was the past two weeks he was licking his groin/leg area which I just thought was a hot spot or something since he showed no other signs of anything.

Update:

2 hours at the vets, $130 poorer and still no answer. Went to a different vet, they looked at the previous xrays and ultrasounds, and did their own ultrasound. They also did bloodwork. No stones, no obstructions and nothing in the bloodwork indicates any problems. Kidneys are working ok.

They are stumped, he's still urinating blood but he's now at least eating. The vet says he looks depressed, which I agree. He's usually really active but now he's just moping around. I guess I would be as well if I was going through this.

They told me to keep him on the pain meds and antibiotics and they will do another check up later this week. She said if things don't improve they are going to discuss something else with me, not sure what it would be about.

So far it's cost me $600, but at least I know he doesn't have any tumors or anything that is obstructing. Keep him in your prayers!

That's very strange. I think I'd seek a second opinion. Having another vet look at him isn't going to hurt anything (except maybe your pocketbook). :( I'd get a copy of his records and take them to another vet to see what they have to say.

On the K9KidneyDiet email list I have read that it can take a long term culture to determine if there is any infection. A simple look at fresh urine isn't worth anything. A culture is usually 2 days, 4? days is better. Unless the proper antibiotic is used the infection isn't going to be knocked down. Here is some reading.
