Hello, I'm a new member here. I rescued my Chihuahua, a female, who's two-years old. Mija is spayed, and she will go in the yard in the mornings (she didn't this morning, but she did go out at four a.m.) and at night. Sometimes she needs to go out at about 3 a.m. In the morning, and right before bed she pees fine. I cannot get her to pee in the evening without a walk! I also cannot get her to poop unless she's on a walk. If I take her on a short walk, ten minutes she will pee. She had one accident the first month she was here. She hasn't peed in the house since. Is this normal for her to only pee on walks? She drinks water (not a lot) and mainly eats wet food. She won't eat it unless it has a little cheese or chicken.

Also, she does not like kids! She's not a big barker, but kids seem to scare her. Any help or advice would be great! I tried some of that housetraining aid spray but she totally ignored it. It's so hot here in New Mexico! Oh, I've had her three months. I leave her in a crate while I'm out and she's never peed in it, and she sleeps in the crate at night.

My 1 1/2 year old Belle only pees twice or three times a day and usually poops once or twice. She will pee and poop without a walk, but it seems no matter what time of the day it is, if we go on a walk, she will pee and poop! Never fails! I'm not quite sure why that is...:) Can't help you with the children problem. GL!

If she was rescued and does not like kids, I would say she has probably been abused by a child in the past. Try this: Have a child come over, and let the dog see him/her from whatever distance she seems comfortable. Reward her for calm behavior. Repeat as often as possible, having the child come closer every time, lavishing the dog with treats and praise for calm, friendly behavior. When the child can pet the dog and she still seems comfortable, switch to a new child (hahaha) and repeat. Soon she will realize children = treats + attention = good! When she lets any child pet her, you have succeded. It takes a while, but it is worth it.

I have no idea of her past. She tried the first few weeks to slip out the gate, but she doesn't anymore. All I know was that she was a stray, for how long, I am not sure. She is very affectionate and smart. She knew sit when I got her which makes me think she was definatly a pet. She's pretty shy and quiet. She loves me and my mother (who's 61) and seems to prefer women. She's okay with men, she likes my adult brother (38) and his wife (40). She's alright with my 12-year-old niece.

My mutts will ALWAYS poop at the dog park. It doesn't matter who early or late we go, they always poop. And the peeing is a given since so many dogs are around.

As for children, that's a tough call depending on the age of the kids. Really small ones scare the beejeebers out of both of mine, usually because of the quick motions and high pitched voices/squeels. Unless it is necessary for her to come in contact with kids, I would just tell any that you encounter that she doesn't do well with kids and for them not to pet her. JMHO.

I would suggest walking close by to your house. When you think she has to go, walk by your place and see if she will go. Give her a chance to go.

One of the dogs I rescued would only go on walks (i'm thinking he maybe was in an apt?) but we did the above and slowly he got used to it.
