We go to off leash parks everyday, just a reference that she doesnt do this on leash only off so far. She is 1 and a half years old and just started doing this last week. She will lay down on the ground and just stare the dog down as its coming closer, and then when the other dog comes up to her she jumps up excitedly and wags her tail and tries to play. I just don't understand this behavior, or if it's good or bad, and is it possible she learned from seeing other dogs do it?

What breed is your dog? Ive had two dogs do this one was a border collie the other is my current dog who is a stabij and they are well known for this, its is hell when two of them meet on the street..They lay there like stone statues until one blinks then its playtime!

This is a typical dog body language to show "no threat" or a submissive position.

I wouldn't be too concerned.

I’m not sure since she is a rescue! Possibly has a breed in her that does this

Hi there! My dog is doing the same thing. I talked to the vet and she thinks it is normal behavior. She just wants to show that she is not an alpha and that she means no trouble.

Maybe more non threatening then alpha denial? My girl will do that to encourage play, then try and mount hump later . Shes been doing it at puppy class to entice more reluctant dogs (especially smaller/younger ones) to play with her.
