The 11 puppies were 4 wks old on Monday. She bit one and that lil girl had to go to ER and nothing serious but a dislocated jaw and a cut on her tongue. Well the mom just bit another this morning. Mom was eating and the pup came up and wanted to nurse. She does not nurse them much...they have started eating moistened puppy food and are drinking water. We do give them puppy milk 3 times a day. Should we keep the mom and pups seperated now?

I was hoping for a lil help or advise as to what our friends should do. The puppies are all seperated from the mother and eating mushy puppy food and the new born milk and they are drinking water. She is waiting for the vet to call. Thanks

I wish I had some advice, but this is not something I'm familiar with. It sounds like separation is a good thing since she's bitten two pups. I would call the vet back or call an e-vet to see what they recommend as far as caring for the pups now.

Good luck.

Hello & welcome to df.
That's a shame. But I think that most bitches will wean their pups at around
that age. Without the biting of course. They will sometimes snap at their pups to discipline them if they go near her food. And yes, I think it a good idea to separate the mum from the pups & get advice from the vet as to how to feed them from now on. They also need regular worming & socialising.

Thank you. Vet said it was fine to have them seperated. THe puppy milk is fine but if htey are drinking water it is not neccessary. The eat a high quality dry puppy food mixed with either the puppy milk or warm water. There is alot of ppl for them to see and be held by. There are 2 other dogs there as well. So we are hopingall will go well.
