Man Says He'll Find Homes For Dogs, Abandons Them In Woods, Police Say
FREETOWN, Mass. -- A man who asks for money to find homes for pets that can no longer be cared for by their cash-strapped owners may be dumping the animals in a wooded area of Freetown, according to police.
Watch Report
NewsCenter 5's David Brown reported Thursday that at least 12 dogs have been found abandoned in the town. Many were found in the Freetown State Forest, police said.
"They are losing their houses, and landlords don't want dogs," Lakeville dog officer David Frates said.
Residents said that the man asks for $25 to find the animals a good home. He's been approaching pet owners at local bars.
""In point of fact, he is taking the $25 and the dog and leaving the dog in the state forest," Freetown Selectwoman Jean Fox said.
The animals were taken to a shelter in Lakeville. Anyone interested in adopting a dog can call 508-947-3891.
