My puppy has had all of her vaccines except for lepto. I’m spacing it far away from the others and she’s set to get the first one in July. Two days ago it was raining and my boyfriend took her out. She ran around a flooded empty dog park. There’s construction nearby the park and tbh we live in NYC (manhattan) where there’s rats everywhere. She may have licked the puddles in the dog park/sniffed them and certainly got very wet splashing around. She did this around 630pmish when it was still light out and the water all over the dog park had only been there for a few hours (it was our first rainy day in awhile).

Im terrified she may have been exposed to lepto. Should i contact my vet or just keep a close eye on her in the coming days or what? Im clinging to the thought that rats are typically nocturnal so they likely hadn’t come out yet for the night to potentially piss in the flooded dog park. Any advice please. Ive been very anxious about this the last two days. Love my puppy so much.

Call the vet and ask what the chances are and what to look for. Knowing has to be better for your peace of mind than not knowing.
They’re closed now. Would it be weird to run this by a different nearby vet office that’s still open that I’m not a patient of?

my googling says there’s about 10 to 20 canine lepto cases in nyc a year. Theres an estimated 500,000 dog in nyc. 20,000-25,000 in my particular neighborhood

It wouldn't be weird since you're worried, but they may not talk to you if you're not a client there. Probably better to take comfort in the odds and call your own vet in the morning.

Called. Felt a bit like an idiot calling because my puppy splashed through some puddles at the dog park. They said while they recommend the lepto vax since we do live in a city with many rats, they typically dont see many cases. Basically just said keep an eye on her and bring her in if she starts to act sick. Of course i googled lepto symptoms and it said dogs typically start acting sick 4-12 days after exposure. So knowing me im gonna be anxious for the next 10 days now till we clear that. Man no one told me about this new puppy parent anxiety. I dont have kids yet so i wonder if it’s the same for new parents -every little sneeze or cough or weird noise and you think “welp, youre clearly dying”

I bet it is the same - with the first kid for sure. I have a 15-week-old puppy myself right now. He's not my first, but I'm still worrying over every little thing. So if yesterday he drove me nuts being so busy, is he too quiet and sick today? Endless opportunity to work myself up over him.
