Is my dog considered a rescue??

my older 9 1/2 year old shep mix was a shelter pup. We got him as a young pup. In fact we got him the day he came to the shelter. His Mom was found pregnant and they fostered her until the pups were old enough to go to their new homes.

Scooby is a pet therapy dog and today while we were at a school visit I was asked if he was a rescue.
Personally I never really considered him a *rescue* He was a puppy when we got him and at that time the shelters here had pit bull mixes so it was very hard to find a non pit puppy. Honestly if we didn't take him he would have gone to someone else by the end of the day, puppies 10 years ago never lasted in our shelters due to the demand.

When I told the teacher who asked if he was a rescue I said: No, not really. We got him as a puppy at a shelter. One of the kids spoke up and said if you got him from the shelter then he is a rescue.

I guess I think of rescues of dogs that are in danger of being put down. I know he never would have gotten put down.

So... was I right or wrong?? Is my dog considered a rescue??

In my eyes if the dog comes from a shelter s/he is a rescue period. Maybe someone else would have adopted him, maybe not... the fact is you gave a dog without a home that was abandoned in a shelter a loving home. You supported other homeless dogs by giving your dollars to a shelter instead of other alternatives. It's good stuff all around I'd say.
Scooby is a rescue. When you adopted him you freed up a place for another dog to enter the shelter/foster program and saved its life. Sure, puppies get adopted faster than older dogs, but they're all rescues.

Thank you for adopting!
When people ask me that about Cara and Mia, I tell them that I don't consider them rescues. If there was any rescuing being done, they were the ones who rescued me. :) I honestly don't care if other people consider their dogs rescues or not. Cara and Mia came from the pound, but I was just lucky there were there on the day I went.
