I want to make sure that i get a puppy that fits our personality, lifestyle. So is it okay to be on one more waiting list where i can pick and choose, (also the timing of the birth). Do breeders require a down payment or something up front to hold our place on the list?

I think different breeders probably handle things differently, so you'd have to ask them. Mine required a down payment to hold a pup for me.

It depends.

I think that it's okay to be on multiple mailing lists provided you are up front with each breeder AND honest about the fact that you are on more than one list. When you narrow it to one litter, you need to let the other breeders know right then- not at 6 weeks when you've been telling them since the puppies were born that you were definitely waiting for them to make their picks.

I agree that honesty is the best policy, and if there's a breeder that has a problem with you being on more than one waiting list, and wanting to ensure you get the pup for yourself, then you may not want to be buying from them anyway.

Most breeders do require a deposit to hold a pup, but not to be on a waiting list.
