Does it usually take dogs a few days to get used to premium dog foods? I just got my black lab off of Purina and put her on **** Van Patten's Natural Balance Utlra. She has had the runs a bit for the last couple of days, do you guys think this will go away with time?

Did you make a slow transition?

What you might want to do is take her off kibble altogether and feed her only rice and boiled chicken in small amounts throughout the day, for several days until her stool is normal. At that point you can gradually replace some of the rice/chicken mixture with the new food. After 3 or 4 days your dog should be back on 100% kibble.

If the loose stool returns, chances are the food is too rich for your dog and you should think about going with another Natural Balance formula.

ETA: It's possible your dog can't tolerate one of the protein sources in the Ultra formula, most likely the lamb. Alot of dogs have problems with lamb.

Yes, gradual transition is best.
When we went to Natural Balance, we mixed the remaining Nutro with the NB Duck and Potato until all that was left was the NB. Had a couple of days of looser stool, but no problems for the last year. We now alternate the NB with Taste Of The Wild and have had no more issues.

Switching foods is a bit of a shock to the digestion system. When it gets used to one food, it gets used to digesting that particular food. Then, when you switch foods, it has to get ised to the new food, so they'll get the runs. It's normal, but unpleasant, so that's why everyone recommends doing the transistion slowly.
