My SIL dropped by today while I was having lunch.... anyway, when I was done, I put my plate on the floor so one of my dogs could lick it... My SIL kind of went off on a tangent about dog germs, and I sat there and listened... and then all I said was "you know, dishwashing tablets have bleach in them".

And then, I don't know if she was serious or not, but she said "Next time I come over, I'll eat on a paper plate."

Now, I will admit that I did that on purpose because I know she hates dogs; she a "cat lady".... has about 10 of them I bet.

But you would let a dog lick your plate, wouldn't you?

I have to admit, I do the same thing to my aunt just because it grosses her out. She almost dies when I share my ice cream cone with Puck or he licks her daughter's face. It also grosses her out when I let the cat drink out of my cup too.

LOL, does she think dog germs are worse than cat germs? Unless she's a freaky clean freak, if she has that many cats she has plenty of cat germs. Every time I turn around there's a cat drinking out of my water glass or something. I let my dogs lick the plates, too. And I don't have a dishwasher or rinse in bleach :p.

I don't let the dog lick dishes that people eat off of. I was raised not to eat after animals.

There are good reasons to fear the parasites/pathogens some dogs might be carrying. I would never let a stranger's dog lick my face. I allow my own dog to lick my face, but she is parasite free. I did not allow her to sleep in my bed until she had been cleared of parasites after adoption.

Clearly the tangent on dog germs isn't the reason. She just didn't like the image of the dog licking the plate she would also be eating off of. It's not really rational, since clearly the dishes will be washed, but it's more of an emotional thing - that image just might make her feel weird.

I do not let my animals eat off of or lick plates or dishware the humans eat off of. Thats just a rule in my house because it freaks my father out. :) I also do not let my animals lick me in the face but this has more to do with Damon trying to lick my eyeshadow off. lol

I am not a germ freak thats just how my house works. :)

About 10 years ago, Valen and I moved in with my mother while I finished college. My mother was appalled that I would let him lick my plate after I was done. She made it clear that it was not acceptable for him to lick her plates. Rather than fight about it, I took one of my plates out of storage specifically so he had one plate he could lick.

This thread made me think of this old chestnut:

A new minister in a rural town was invited to dinner by one of his parishoners. When he sat down at the table, he noticed that the dishes appeared somewhat unclean.

He expressed his concern to his hosts and they replied "We're very sorry Reverend. They're as clean as soap and water can get them."

Ashamed that he had mistaken wear and tear for filth, he began to eat his meal.

When dinner was over, the hostess placed the dishes on the floor and called to the two dogs in the living room, "Here Soap! Here Water! Time to clean up boys!"

I don't normally let Holly lick the plates, only time really is when there is abit of cheese left on a plate, Holly does however get to lick cups clean, my auntie's BC Poppy loves a glass of water, i personally don't give water to Holly in glasses, Poppy will cry if someone has a glass of water.
