I got Zero back in the middle of February of this year. I swear he's the perfect dog. We've done some work on leash manners, some work on recall and I've taught him down. I swear this guy is like the perfect dog and I'm a bit scared. I can bring him in and tell him to sit while I fill up a tug-a-jug for my hound. He will sit there and wait (though you can tell from his tail that he really doesn't want to) for me to fill up the tug-a-jug, go outside, get the hound to wait patiently and then feed him. Then he will continue sitting until I get his food bowl, fill it up and put it down for him. It's a beautiful thing. I took him out to play with the neighbors dog yesterday. The neighbors dog was on a tie out, but I dropped Zero's leash so they could both run around in the front yard. He behaved perfectly. When he wandered into someone else's yard I would call him and he would instantly turn and come to me. I was amazed by how well his recall really was (it's one thing to do recall work in the backyard and another to do it with no control over the dog). When my neighbor put her dog in the backyard she tried to get Zero to go along with her, but he refused to in the fence or follow her if I was not around. Honestly, I was surprised as he pretty much loves everyone.

I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop with this dog. Surely he must have some horrible, horrible habit that he hasn't shown me yet. Yes, he does jump on people sometimes, but we can certainly work on that. Yes, he loves to chase cats, squirrels and rabbits, but what dog doesn't? He gets entirely too distracted by other dogs, but that's the only real issue I have with him. Did I really somehow stumble across the perfect dog in the shelter, or has he just not settled in quite well enough to show me his bad side?

What Zero hasn't told you yet is that before the two of you met he'd run up thousands of dollars on his credit cards and hasn't filed his tax returns for the last two years.

That would not surprise me. He wasn't fixed before I got him so he probably has several illegitimate children on the side that he's dodging child support from.
