We went over to a friends house the other day and brought Bryna along. The friends mom was loving on Bryna, and brought out a bowl of kibble. I told her to not give it to her, because she would get sick. Of course she asked why, and I told her that Bryna is raw fed, and that she doesn't deal well with strange food. The friend just told me that his mom said that if she knew where we lived, she would call the SPCA on us for neglect, because her vet told her that raw food is bad for dogs.

My concern is that we don't live very far from this woman so it might be possible for her to figure out where we live. Should I be concerned? Bryna isn't being neglected whatsoever. Healthy weight, great coat, fed and watered everyday, lives inside with us so she definitely has shelter. My dog can't be taken away because of diet, right? My gut tells me we are okay, but I can't help but be a little scared.

Don't think they have a leg to stand on as feeding raw evidently is done by many. Relax and in future just because the mom is a jerk tell your friend no more visits to friend's home. Again not because she can do anything more because I would want my dog around an idiot.

Differences in opinion about diet do not equal neglect. She can report you all she wants to, the worst that will happen is AC or a humane investigator will come to talk to you and roll their eyes right out of their heads at the ridiculousness of this woman's claim. If she actually tries to report you for feeding a raw diet, I'm not even certain it would even make it to a stage where AC would involve you at all. I think she'd get a "thank you for your call, ma'am" and the report would go straight to the circular file.

Take a moment to recall all the threads you've seen here where AC won't seize dogs for actual offenses, and rest easy. Most ordinances are written along the lines of "must have adequate food, shelter, water" - really the lowest common denominator. As long as your dog is in good physical shape, AC doesn't give two craps WHAT you feed.

It was my first time going over there, and i had to bring Bryna because there were fireworks going off and stressing her out. The last thing I feed is my neighbors reporting a crying dog. :(

I didn't think about that, Sass. AC has more to worry about right now than a complaint about a raw fed dog. :p

I am pretty sure most Animal Controls would probably just be happy that you're feeding your dog period. If they did come out to check on you, I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with it once they saw how well she was taken care (given your rabies vaccine is up to par with your local laws).

Rabies is up to date and is in a drawer next to the door for easy access. :)

Roxie is fed partially raw right now but I just tell people she's on grain free food and that kibble with grains will make her sick because she's not used to that much.

If you do take her over just tell the mother she has just had a big meal so does not need any of her kibble, thank you.

As an aside, I think you will find that a raw fed dog will eat kibble without any issues, but a kibble fed dog may puke up a raw diet because it is more rich .

Bryna is actually the opposite. She managed to get hold of some loose kibble at my parents and had the runs the next day. She has always had a more selective tummy, though. I am surprised that she handles prey model raw so well!

I think Animal Control has enough to do than to respond to a complaint that a dog is being fed a widely accepted dog diet.
I think that the woman had more of an issue with the type of raw we feed. My boyfriend tends to brag about how Bryna loves sheep heads, snacks on duck feet, and chows down on whole chickens and a variety of organs.

I agree with the above responses: It will either be disregarded, an officer will show up look at your dog and walk away or it will never be complained about. The problem she will have is unless the dog is an active state of medical neglect most animal controls will issue a warning vs. seize the dog at the first visit.

Doesn't matter.... If the dog appears healthy.... No biggy....
I tried telling that to her, too. The fact that Bryna is better off now than she was on kibble, and that she i even starting to put on weight. All she heard was raw myths that are fueled by ignorance.*sigh*

I was thinking about scheduling an exam here soon (when i find a vet open to raw.) If AC does end up at my apartment I could just show them a bill of health. :)

Ah, let her call I say. I have had ppl threaten to call on me before when I had last, my rescue Doberman bc she was skinny ( she was a puppy mill rescue so she had a problem with her thyroid that caused her to be skinnny.

If you are really worried about it I would contact the SPCA first befor she does & let them know what happened & if your comfortable have them come out & see your dogs & file a report that there is nothing wrong (which I'm sure there isn't).

Here in OH ... I had a complaint about my Doberman. Animal control came out and found nothing wrong ... and said they knew it was just someone with a problem because of the "breed" ..... I just showed them the OH county dog license and health records and my dog ... they were satisfied and I believe they called the people who complained back ... to tell of their findings. I was never bothered again. :D

Why in the world do people think it's ok to just feed someone else's dog? Gads, this irks me. And then to threaten to call the SPCA on top of it? I would be furious.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, either, and would take no action unless the idiot really does report you.
