My 5 month old puppy, Layla, constantly runs after our cat. We have had Layla for 2 months now and she is a rotti/lab mix. Layla constantly runs after the cat and pins him down (it looks like she is using the cat as a chew toy).

The cat, funny enough, still has interest in the puppy and often sits perched above her and watches her. He is brave at times and will walk around the puppy when she is sleeping. The cat never tries to go after the puppy, and still sits in his normal spots. The cat isn't tiny either, he is 16 pounds of love and when we first adopted the puppy the cat outweighed her.

The puppy just recently graduated from training class, and knows commands like leave it, come, let's go, stay, sit, down, paw, etc... I tried commands like "leave it" or "no bite" with the pup and tried even making up a new command with the clicker, but she doesn't seem to understand. We are now putting her in her cage when she lunges at the cat. We've been working on this since we've adopted her (2 months).

Is there anything I can do? Or should she eventually grow out of it? I would love it if they could find a way to coexist.

Is your puppy ever calm around the cat? Those are the moments to jump on with rewards and praise. You could also keep your pup dragging a leash in the house so when you see she's about to give chase, you grab the leash and stop it.

Being we own an Amstaff and a cat we have had to be very strict with Dakota on any negative movements toward our cat.We have a small horse crop that sits beside me on the end table in the living room, when Dakota has attempted to chase the cat we swat him with the crop(not hard, just scares him) and say..leave the cat alone.Dakota is now 10 months old and shares the yard and front porch with our cat..If we see he is even eyeballing the cat all we have to say is..Dakota leave that cat alone, and he does.
