I am confused. I was thinking about switching vets.. I have a 1 year old yorkiepin, and I just got a new puppy, he's only 8 weeks old. Our current vet only does 2 distempers.. One at 8 weeks, and the booster.. I called to another local vet and they do 4 distempers! One every 4 weeks until 20 weeks.. I was wondering how necessary this is, how many others have had a vet to do this? I am so paranoid about parvo, and I am either skeptical of this new vet, or dissapointed in my old vet, whichever hold true for what should be done lol.. The new vet is ALOT pricier too..

The rationale behind revaccinating every 4 wks is that the pup has the mother's antibodies which are wearing off and their own immune systems are developing... so as the mom's immunity wears off the shots are meant to bolster the pup's. My puppy had DHPPs at 8, 12, and 16 wks.

I don't know where upstate you are, but I've found that vets up here, on the whole, suck. I've had a really hard time finding competant veterinarians who don't charge an arm and a leg.

In order to make sure she got the final booster after 17 weeks old, Molly ended up getting four DDHP shots. I think it depends on the timing of the shots. Some puppies only get 3 but my vet felt it was important that she get the final after 17 weeks b/c that's when the pup's own immune system starts to take over.
