We have a big patio that the dogs use to go potty when were not here or when they are in their room. Is there any way to start training them to only go potty on one side or in a certain area? They use the whole thing, or most of it anyway.

The usual approach to teaching a dog to use a specific area is by making that area look and feel different from the rest of the yard....ie; sand/gravel, shredded bark when the rest of the yard is grass. You start by taking them out on leash...everytime...until they understand that's the correct potty area.
In your case, if you want them to only use one side, you'll have to section it off with furniture, chairs, BBQ grill, planters, etc (make it look visually different) and take them out on leash with lots of praise for going in the right spot.
