Hi all, I have a somewhat unusual training problem. It seems that my dog (8 years old Lhasa Apso/Maltese mix) is a little too well trained, and since a few years ago she will only go potty outside. While this is ordinarily not a problem, if I have to leave the house for a considerable period of time, she will hold it until I return, no matter how long I am gone. She used to do her business on pee pads when necessary, but since a few years ago she refuses to use them (I have also tried artificial grass but with no success). I live in an apartment, and unfortunately have no backyard to let her out in. Also, when the weather is bad outside (e.g., heavy rain or snow), she refuses to go out, and again she will hold it for a very long time. This is unhealthy for her and unpleasant for the both of us, so somehow I would like to retrain her to do her business on pee pads when she needs to go, and either I am not available to walk her or the weather conditions are bad. Does anyone have any tips on how I might be able to get her to do this? This would be especially helpful now, given the upcoming winter and the fact that she does not like to go outside in the snow. Any ideas would be much appreciated, thank you!
