Hey everyone. I haven’t been on here in a while but I would love some advice today. My 12 year old Basset Hound developed vestibular syndrome about 3 weeks ago. It was spontaneous and improved with steroid injections. A few days later she developed an abscess tooth. This became severely infected very fast. The vet wanted to remove the tooth but she was far to weak from the recent illness with vestibular syndrome. We treated her with antibiotics for a week to get the oral infection under control. She did well.. Was eating soft canned puppy food and maintained her weight. Unfortunately for some reason the abscess turned into a tumor on her jaw. It became very large very fast and we decided the best course of action would be to remove the tumor.

We were very hesitant about anesthesia but the tumor was becoming necrotic and we did not have a choice. So last Wednesday she had surgery to remove the tumor. He also cut out 6 bad teeth at the same time. He thinks he got all the tumor but there is no guarantee that it won’t come back. We chose not to send it to a pathologist since she is 12 and we would not pursue chemotherapy if it was cancerous.

She did not eat anything from Wednesday night to Saturday. She drank well and we gave her antibiotics with bits of cheese and bread. We kept pain medicine in her so she was comfortable.

My husband is an avid deer hunter and we have tons of deer meat in the freezer. Since Betsy was literally turning her nose up to everything we offered he decided to cook some deer burger. She ate it.... she ate 1 pound on Saturday (split between three meals) and ate 1 pound on Sunday. We offer her the dog food at each meal in hopes she will eat it but she won’t.

This morning I offered her more canned dog food and she refused. I cooked her an egg and she ate it.

Is it okay to give her people food if that is all she will eat? I know eggs and deer burger are excellent protein sources. She is acting strong. Drinking, peeing, pooping. She is jumping up on the couch and begging for hugs.

She is still very thin and i can feel all of her ribs and her pelvis bone. She has always been a very young acting 12 year old Basset. And always has been very petite. Her heaviest weight at 29 pounds. We rescued her when she was 8 so we aren’t sure why she is so small......

Any advice is appreciated.

Laurie

There's absolutely nothing wrong with feeding a dog things like eggs and deer. It's a step above most dog food. Probably all dog food, really.

If you go to the Dog Food section, we have threads on cooking for your dog and feeding raw. You just need to be careful to make sure the dog gets all the nutrients they need, and it's not that complicated. You just need to do a little research.

I hope Betsy feels better soon.
