I've never had a female dog before. I picked up Rosie yesterday at the pound and have 30 days to have her spayed, but they won't do it until she isn't in heat anymore. How can I tell when her cycle is over?

Also, my DH thinks we should keep her and Rascal separated until her cycle is over, but that can be up to 28 days, right? BTW, Rascal is nuetered. What are your thoughts on keeping them separated?

Well it depends dog to dog but in my experience most are in heat for 3 weeks most fertile during the middle week. Hallie retained a little swelling even after she was out of heat for about a week and she had a little discoloration. She may get a clear discharge before she goes out of her heat, she also won't accept a mate. Meaning if your dog tried to mount her she would refuse him and growl and nip at him.

Thanks so much! It's kind of a moot point now that she has tested positive for heartworm though. That has to be treated first. :(
