Home Checks? Sticky request

I already was established with accomplishments in the dog performance area so my breeder didn't see the need to perform a home check, She felt secure enough just talking to me that my home was good, at least thats what she hinted at. I did go to her house and stay with her the day i took Hawkeye home.

A home check just seems a little extreme to me. I've seen and talked to rescues though that wanted to do a home check, credit check and background check on me. I was like, "Umm, I'm adopting a dog not a kid right?" It was ridiculous. If the rescue wants to check that I do indeed have a fenced yard, fine. Beyond that I think it's just ridiculous and insane.

I would never let a breeder or adoption agency do a home check on me, nor would I turn over my social security number.

I understand where they're coming from, I honestly do, but for me it's a principle thing and it would be a significant invasion of privacy. You can verify I own my home versus renting by checking on the county auditor site (if I rented, I would be willing to let you verify with my landlord that I'm allowed to have pets). You can verify that I take my pets to the vet by speaking with my vet. You can verify I have a fenced yard (which I will come spring) by driving by. Beyond that, how I run my household is none of your business.

Me getting a dog from a breeder reputable or not isn't likely to ever happen either though. Too many dogs needing homes already for me to be responsible for one being bred.

(after I had driven my entire family out to meet the breeder and her dogs) My breeder drove the 2hrs to my house to deliver the puppy, go over her reg and microchip papers, go over any questions I had and lend me an ex-pen. I was thrilled to avoid the 4hr roundtrip. And I was happy to have her in my house and let her see where her pup will live. I've nothing to hide and I plan on keeping in touch with her. But if a breeder asked to have my social security info and other personal data then I would say NO, and pass on that breeder. I just see no need.

None of my dogs' breeders required home checks, just fyi. Not saying go to a reputable breeder but in my experience most don't do home checks. It seems like more of a rescue thing.

Mine did interviews. No adoption form, just email or call and start talking. One required us to meet her the first time we got a dog from her and I understand why because it was a toy breed and we had a young kid (can potentially be a bad mix). My second breeder I talked to a few times and told her about my previous dog experience and breeder and I was good to go. Both had contracts but that's a different story imo.

A good breeder doesn't really need a home check. I'm talking about a good breeder not the ones people think are good. Ones that show and are listed in their breeds national or regional clubs.

These breeders will not just sell to you just because you called them up. By the time they sell you a puppy, they would have talked to you multiple times, possibility met you a few times or you would have been referred to them. So by this time they have a read on you already.
