I am just a person that loves animals, that rescues when it is needed. With that being said, here is my problem...
I took this 8 week old female pup that does'nt eat, and they were going to put her down (county style). She is skinny as a rail and has loose stool. I have had her for 3 days and can not get her to eat wet or dry puppy food. I tried to put it in her mouth, but she gags. I know that you should not give a puppy human food, but I tried a little bit of ham and cheese. She gobbled it down, so I know that she is able to eat. When I first saw her, she was eating dirt. What do you think, any suggestions?

Vet first to rule out any illness(s) and worms ... which are highly possible as she is so skinny! Diarrhea is also present in Parvo and other illnesses.

Thank you for rescuing her! :)

This is just what I would do ... I would try a very very small amount of boiled chicken breast and slightly mushy cooked white rice added to some soft puppy food just until you can get her to a vet. Just enough to tempt her to eat.

She needs to keep hydrated as puppies can dehydrate very quickly. Adding water to dry puppy food if it is not canned helps to get some water into the pup. Actually ... I would personally use the canned puppy food ... as it is definitely more water based than dry.

Try to get her to at least drink water ... or you can purchase sodium free chicken broth and add a tad to her water to entice her to drink. If you prefer you could save the water from the boiled chicken and cool it to add to her water ... make sure to strain the fat off if the chicken had skin on it. It is better to take the skin off before boiling actually.

If for some odd reason she will not eat or drink I would seek out an ER Vet.

This is Sunday ... hopefully you can get her in to see the vet tomorrow. I also hope she eats and drinks something for you.

Thank you so much for the advice! I do infact plan to take her to the vet Tuesday as our vet will be back in town. She does drink water and I just boiled some chicken right before I checked my email. I will let you know how it works out. Again, many thanks!

Update: The chicken and rice was a success, she ate about 2 tablespoons and lapped up the liquid. But she would not touch the puppy chow I smashed up in it. I am just thrilled that she ate for me. Baby steps, and I will take whatever I can get.
Thank you all for your support and I will keep you posted.

Re: Hi all, I am ruboni.

Thank you all for your support! I am so very happy to say that my little girl has had a complete recovery! :whoo: And is now fat, sassy and healthy! Here are some new pics of her, what a change! And to think, the Vet said her chances were very slim. She is now ready for adoption, wish her luck....

Re: Hi all, I am ruboni.

I am so glad she survived! Good for you both! I wish her much success on being adopted. I was not sure if you would keep her being she just kind of fell into your lap. :)

She looks much much better! What a sweet little pup! She is a cutie!

You forgot to mention what was wrong with her in the beginning?

Re: Hi all, I am ruboni.

I am sorry, I did forget to mention what was wrong with her. She was severly enimic either due to worms, fleas or both. Also she has a heart mermor, coccidia and was failing to thrive. Although I had wormed her with professional grade meds., she still had eggs in her stool. She weighed 4 pounds when I took her to the vet and 12 days later she was at 6.6 pounds. She is around 8 pounds now and just keeps getting better. She plays, runs and acts like a puppy now. I took her by the people that I got her from and they were shocked to see her doing so well. I also was shocked to find out that she was almost 4 months old! GOD was watching over this little baby!
Although I wish I could keep her, I am a rescuer (over 2000 in the last 7 years) and just can't keep them all. They are my passion and rescue is my calling.
