Hi- My name is Christina and my maltipoo, Max was just neutered today- He is a year old and is about 8 lbs. I picked him up about 3 hours ago, and he will not relax ever since. He had an undescended testicle so they had to make 2 incisions. Whenever I try to pick him up to carry him to my bed or somewhere more comfortable, he yelps and tries to run away from me. He freaks out so much that I'm afraid to touch him. Is this pretty common? I'm not sure what I need to do. He's just standing there, looking sleepy and tired... and it's breaking my heart :(

I would just let him be....he's probably confused and very groggy....Just keep a close eye on him and if he's not back to his old self by tomorrow -- call the vet and explain his symptoms to him.

Is he wearing a Cone??....make sure he doesn't lick the incision and tomorrow when he feels better..don't let him run around too much...;)

Just remember...keep a eye on him....but let him be.:)

Did your vet send home pain meds? If not you may want to give your vet a call and request them. Just let him sleep. No steps or running around because it can cause swelling and prolong healing. He should be back to his old self in a few days. My little "Squeak" was not even 5 lbs. when she was spayed and she it fine.

I agree with everyone. Give him some space by himself where he is not going to be bothered by anyone or anything (other pets) He needs to heal now. I also agree that some pain meds are in order. A few days and your doggy will be back to normal. I wouldn't be picking him up right now if possible, you don't want him to associate being picked up with the pain he is feeling right now.

Thanks everyone! I did get the pain killer from the vet, and I've given him one every 12 hours. He seems to be doing just a little bit better than yesterday.. But he still seems very depressed. Most of the time, he is just standing there, staring into space. He won't even respond to me when I call him. I really hope he will go back to old himself soon- He's normally such a hyper/friendly dog who loves to play allll the time. :( I guess I'm definitely freaking out a lot more than I should since I'm a first time dog-owner..

pain meds and anethesisa will do that to you. Some dogs just want to be left alone and they get a little "doopy" at times. Other dogs are just bouncing off the walls. My dog was a little loopy and didn't want to be touched or anything after she was spayed...plus she arrived at a new home the day that she was spayed.

I would just leave him alone for a couple days, let him be.

this is semi related, but back a few weeks ago, when l gave my dog heartworm meds from the doc, he did the same thing and sat and looked into space. in fact sometimes he even started swaying left and right from being too tired. I think its because they were never used to the changes in their body, therefore they are trying to get used to it, but tries to stay away from the owners because it might scare them (read that somewhere online, l forgot where)
