OK, let me start out by saying I was really, really stupid. Every year around here people die by drowning in our rivers. They are cold and can be very fast in places.

It's an unusually hot day today so Schmoo and I went to the river. We waded across and went to an island. We've only gone there once before and this time we wanted to explore. We both did some swimming where the water is slow and then moved down the island. We got to the end and across the river was another big bank to explore. I saw people on the other side and thought they had swam across. The river looked fast but I was thinking Schmoo and I were both strong swimmers, I'm really curious and those other people made it across. (They tell me later they didn't swim across. DOH) Well the current was a lot stronger then I expected. I know better to fight current but I seemed to be stuck in an eddy. My stomach/side also started hurting a lot. (It's just slightly over 4 weeks since my gall bladder surgery). Well I was a little worried and I reached out and grabbed Schmoo's collar.

He calmly starts pulling me to shore. When we got close and I had caught my breath, I let go and started swimming on my own. Schmoo immediately turned to check on me. When he saw I was swimming he let me be, but kept looking back to make sure I was ok. OK, I'm telling myself that if Schmoo hadn't been there I would have been fine. I just needed to swim down stream to get out of the eddy and then swim to shore and maybe I'd be sore and tired but everything would have been fine right? I don't know. I'm just really glad Schmoo was there and will never ever do it again.

We explore the beach for a while, but Schmoo and I still have to go back. I find a log that goes most of the way across and takes us past the strongest current. So Schmoo and I walk across the log then jump in. This is a big deal for Schmoo, because although he swims amazingly well, he's always scared to jump in deep water. We swim across and there's no problem except that the current rips my water shoe off. I don't care, I just want the safety of land. Once there, I look for my shoe and see it hasn't gone as far as I expected. I toss a rock near where it is, so Schmoo looks, and tell him to go get it. And he does! This is the same dog that never returns a ball, all the way, that's been thrown in the water. I praised him tons and he was suitable proud.

In fact a while later he celebrated his great deeds by rolling in a dead snake

Oh wow...it sounds like its a good thing that you had Schmoo with you.

I live in a river town. Several years ago, a cousin of mine drown in the Ohio River from getting caught in an undertow. :( He was a very good swimmer but often you can't see them until its too late.

Woohoo! Go schmoo!

Sounds like you guys had a scary fun time!
Yes, I like how I said "a little bit worried:rolleyes: umm... that might be an understatement. The rest of the time was quite fun and Schmoo is tuckered out
You have a great dog
Yes :) I think he's the greatest but I know others here will disagree. Some silly people might think there dog is the greatest

That's very sad. I'm sorry.

I really do know better. I'm so mad at myself. The last few years have been really bad on the rivers around here and what makes it worse is it's mostly the young people who die.

It was really sad...he was only 12 years old.

Anyway, I'm glad that everything turned out alright. Schmoo is a special dog to watch out for you like that.

Schmoo certainly is my hero. The more I think about it the more I realize how remarkable it was. Today I found out that shortly after we left the river someone drowned :( It sounds like he was very close to where I was. I'm just...speechless
