Your dog knows everything. Period. They even know if you have an infection and know if you have cancer. Their sense of smell has been used to detect cancer and infection.

They might not show it, but all of that "stuff" such as getting high or getting drunk impacts your dog (cats too). They can sense altered brain function and altered brain waves. I suspect they know and are mistrustful of you when this is going on.

I had a dog years ago that would growl and move off from a person on Dilantin (to prevent seizures after having a severe head injury). When that person went off Dilantin the dog was fine with them.

Dogs sense of smell is over 1000× stronger than humans so they can definitely smell the alcohol on your breath and probably sweating out of the pores in your skin so they know something is up. Dogs are also pretty tuned in to their owners emotions so I think they have a pretty good idea that something is different and if they can accosiate that with alcohol smell they will know when you're getting on the sauce.
