There's a recorded story of a man, Phineas Gage, who survived having an iron bar go all the way through his head. The "only" long-lasting effect was that his personality changed, due to the centers of the brain that were destroyed. I've never heard of it happening with a dog before, though.

Wow! It's just so hard to believe. We're so careful and sometimes small things can have huge consequences. Then you hear about this and he is recovering just fine!
