GSD mix or purebred?

I adopted Enya last year November from a local animal shelter. I've had some people say she's just a badly bred GSD, which wouldn't be surprising considering the area she came from, or that she's mixed with something else (one person said Labrador??). Anyway, it doesn't really matter, but I am curious to see what you guys think.

Next to Badgar, my male GSD

She looks like a GSD but she's very overweight, so it's hard to tell.
Oh my.. Yes.. I say she is pure.. but golly gee put BOTH those dogs on a diet. I mean really seriously.

I do not know what you are feeding.. but cut it by 1/3. For every 5 pounds a GSD is overweight you will lose 6 months of life. That is straight from my veterinarian. Trim is the word of the day....

When I had my GSD that was supposed to weigh 95 pounds I fed her 1 and 3/4 trs cup of ABady Granular a DAY. For kibble I feed a dog that needs to weigh no more than 70 pounds 2.5 to 3 cups a day of kibble and that is with a LOT of exercise.

Please.. they are lovely dogs BTW.. reduce their food substantially.
Enya has lost 4kgs since I adopted her, I can easily feel her ribs now.

Badgar is already on a diet :) He does look fatter in that photo than he is in person, or perhaps I'm blind to it as I see him all the time, regardless I have cut back on his food recently.
not to over step my bounderies here, nor do i mean to disrepect anyone....

but, OP was asking for what breed she/he has, NOT that her dogs ar overweight.. remember to you they may look over weight, but, there could be other things that are underlying, ( IE health problems etc), and so, we should not judge by what few pics we see.

i have always been one to free feed my dogs, always have always will, but, i never over step my boundries and tell someone because of what my vet says should go for all dogs, is just not nice ;) we all love our dogs and we want the best for them, but, we should also consider the posters feelings about things, you, nor i, know what all is going on..

IMHO we should only help guide people with what the posts says, i have joined many forums and find this happens to all. remember to each his/her own, and the only one that knows what really goes on is the owner.

again, i am not trying to be rude or anything, it is just i found that statement to be very, well, crossing the line when you start to say your dog is fat! kinda of thing.

OP your dogs are beatiful and i love the colors, as for the one wether it is GSD or mix, IMPO she does look like she is mixed with maybe lab.. i have a lab/whippet mix with TONS of stuff, to me it does not matter, i love them just the same, the only true way to tell is to get a DNA test, depending on the area it could cost a few dollars to a few 100, but, go check it out, good luck, either way she is cute ;)

As a person who owns GSDs, I'm one to come right out and say "Does your dog have any health issues?" If the answer is no, it's "Put your dog on a diet."

I've had people call my dogs fat. I ask them to put their hands on my dogs and they immediately take it back.

She's purebred, just not well bred. Nice senior though.

I have, too. People who are used to looking at stock coat GSDs think Jaia looks fat but it's the hair.

Telling someone that their dog is overweight is neither a personal insult nor a moral judgment. It's an observation. It's not said with spite or meanness. :) It's just information that the owner may not be aware of. The OP even said that she may be blind to it as she sees them all the time. That's very possible.

The dogs both look very sweet.

Thanks for the replies ^_^
Badgar was 2kgs heavier than he should be at his last vet visit, bad me I know :( I must get him weighed again to see how he's doing.

Unfortunately we don't have DNA tests here, at least not so far as I know, but it's not such a big deal, I just wanted to see some different opinions of what she could be :)
IMPO i think there's a tiny bit of border collie in there. see the white tip on the tail and the sweet whimsicality..

Are we looking at the same pictures? I don't see white on the tail. I have old eyes though. ;) She looks like a pure bred dog to me.

second picture look at the tip of her tail
GSDGAL, it's not unusual for GSD seniors to have white hairs on their tail tips.
that is true, but coupled with the very fine bones and smaller head and also the border collie spark in her eye

are you sure the bone doesn't look finer because the dog is overwieght
no she's definitely finer boned.....I'm sticking with 2% border collie 98% badly bred GSD
Sorry, but I must disagree :) My new girl is relatively fine boned too, but she's still a GSD

Bone density does not dictate pure status, nor does a "Spark" of the eye indicate mixed status.
I was raised in country australia with a pack of 14 border collies and border collie crosses. I stand by my opinion :) but it doesn't mean we all can't be friends :p
And I'm in purebred Shepherds of all lines, so I stand by mine. Actually, that face looks a lot like that of my Old Man.
