Not sure why but my pup seems to enjoy ripping these clumps of grass out of the ground. Its not eating them, just shreds its it to pieces, especially the root section. Is this just part of normal puppy teething? Or is shredding of the roots actually a technique dogs utilize to keep their teeth clean and healthy in the wild. Also can anyone identify what type of plant this is... 🌱

I recommend that you try to keep him from doing it. A friend's Doberman is currently hospitalized after being treated for an obstruction from eating grass, despite their efforts to prevent him from doing it.

I'm not a plant expert, but it looks like it may be some sort of ornamental grass.

I would not allow the dog to do this for multiple reasons :

1) as you probably know, some plants can be poisonous to dogs. Also, fertilizer and mulch.
2) unlike traditional lawn grass, some ornamental grasses can have VERY sharp edges which could potentially lacerate the dog's lips and tongue.
3) the scenario appears to be a public or 'city-run' cultivated garden. Frankly speaking, it's just not good etiquette if a dog owner allows / encourages their dog to destroy such property.

Okay, when I answered, I hadn't seen the video because it wouldn't play on my tablet. I agree with petpeeve that it's very poor etiquette to allow your dog to destroy other's property, whether public or private. The second he started digging, he should have been redirected and moved along.
