I am researching puppy foods and see a bunch that are grain free - is this preferable? If so, why? TIA!

I have just switched over to grain free and my main reasoning is for the higher protein for my senior golden.

Also, he has some food allergies (corn/soybean/wheat), so I've always avoided these foods anyway, so I'm trying grain free to see if it further helps with that.

With grain free, you're going to have a much higher percentage of meats, which dogs are meant to eat and seem to thrive on (at least most dogs).

Grains create volume. Volume creates poop. A cup-and-a-half of food that's full of corn doesn't provide as much nutrition and a cup of food that's mostly meat.

Some dogs just do better with grains off the menu. I didn't know until he was on raw [I failed at feeding grainfree] but Max gets eye boogers from wheat. Some dogs have much worse issues.
