Chloe is a 3 year old Toller. She is well trained; she does agility, knows a dozen tricks, and is now getting into herding.
For herding, it is necessary to have a good "down". She is great if I point down while giving the command, but flakey if I just say the command. She will "sit" and look up at me to see if that was right. If I say it a couple more times, she will do it. Though she seems to understand better if her breakfast is in front of her; then she does it immediately.
She does a "come", "sit", "jump" and "wait" just fine without a hand gesture, or even being in sight of me; but just can't seem to do it with "down".
We are working it hard, but she still isn't getting it solidly.
Any suggestions?
update! I think I have broken her.
Now, whenever she thinks a command might be coming, she does a down without being asked. If I then tell her "sit" she will sit for a second, and then resume a down.
