Last Friday I picked up a puppy about 6 weeks old from the local shelter to foster at home. He was brought in with a litter of pups some of which had already been treated for Mange. I was told by the shelter that the pup I was taking did not have Mange. When I got him home and gave him a bath, I relaized he did have Mange. I wasn't very sure about Mange, so I called the shelter they told me my dogs would be fine as long as I washed my hands, and kept him in his little gated off play area. Monday I took him to the vet to get his first Mange shot. The vet seemed very upset that I had this pup in my home living with my Mange free dogs. He told me it is very contagious, and if he's in the home my dogs are likely to get it also, because the mites can live for several days, and will walk around in carpeting, and bedding looking for a host. I took the puppy back to the shelter, but feel terrible about it, and want to help the little guy, but have to put my dogs health first. So I guess I am just looking for second opinions, maybe someone who has dealt with this before.

im guessing you are talking about sarcoptic mange because demodex isn't contaigious.

mange shots????

every mangey dog I've had treated has either been dipped or given ivomec...

but they all had demodex...id contact the place you are fostering for if I were you and let them know what the vet said.

Yes it is Sarcoptic Mange.

The shots were Ivermectin, also given to my dogs.

I already contacted the shelter, they aplogized.....I have just been thinking about going back to get him, not sure if there is a way I could make it work without infecting my dogs.

Do you know if it was sarcoptic mange or demodex mange? Demodex isn't contagious, but I haven't heard of Ivermectin shots for sarcoptic mange (though I'm sure it would work). So I'll assume it's sarcoptic, because of what your vet said about it being contagious.

I guess I've never put a lot of thought into preventing sarcoptic mange. It just doesn't seem that serious to me, because it's fairly easy to get rid of. healthy dogs don't usually get a severe infestation. Frontline kills mange mites, although it's not strong enough to get rid of a severe infestation, it can prevent it. Revolution is used in treating mange. Mange shampoos are common, and the ivermectin shots your vet is using should do the job. IMO, it's not something to get too worried about.

Be aware that the shelter may have euthanized the puppy already :( . They usually do if an animal is returned for health reasons.
