Hi, I was just wondering about the flea/tick prevention when it says to buy by your dog's weight. Since mine is a large breed puppy (most likely going to weigh over 55+ pounds when mature), I should buy the over 55 lbs package?
Sorry if it sounds stupid, but I just want to make sure before I buy anything. Thanks!

Whatever your using you want to get it for the size your dogs is when you're going to use it. If your puppy is 25 lbs right now you want to get the package for 25 lb dogs. BUT a lot of those products are not safe for dogs under a certain age, so be sure to check on that before administering it to your puppy. Your best bet is honestly to talk to your veterinarian and discuss what they recommend for flea/tick treatment...

Most vets will sell you a single dose until your puppy reaches his adult weight. You can take him into your vet's once a month for a weight and to buy a single dose at the appropriate weight. (No need for a office visit with the vet, plus use this as a training opportunity to get you pup comfortable going to the vet's office. Positive reinforcement and treats. I do agility and one of the command that I have found very useful is "table." My dogs step on the scale without a problem and on the exam table.)

Don't be sorry for asking a question before buying a flea control medication for your dog. It is better to ask first. Always make sure you know the exact weight of the dog before administering any meds this way you know you are giving the dog the right amount.

Whenever I buy the heartworm (Interceptor) preventive for Lola I have her weighed at the vet before buying it. When I first adopted her she was 10.4 pounds. The heartworm dosage she received was 2-10 pounds. When it came time to renew I called the vets office and they had a package ready for the next size up which started at 11 pounds. I had them weigh her and if I had not done that I would have been giving her to much as she then weighed 10.2 pounds so the same dosage I had given her before would be appropriate and that is what I bought from the vet instead of the next size up.
