There are both fast-acting flea meds meant for killing a lot of fleas at once, and long-lasting flea meds that will continue killing any new fleas that might hatch. Baths with mild dishsoap can be a good option for dealing with the worst of an infestation, but won't provide any lasting protection and may dry out a dog's skin if you do it repeatedly.
