That's not always an option or I wouldn't be posting. I leave him outside (fenced in) while I'm at work, but he slams against the door and is ruining it now that a part of it broke. He'll start doing this even if he was the one wanting outside in the first place after a short amount of time.
I have a wireless fence he's gotten used to with about 30-50yds he can run around in. I try and take him for mile runs around 3x a week but it varies with work and other obligations. We play fetch or I'll chase him pretty much everyday in the house as well. He spends most of his time inside with us when we're home, we let him out for short times to go to the bathroom and let him back in. He's outside while we're at work, usually for about 6hrs.
We tried crate training him when we got him, and it simply didn't stick. Tired short amounts of time, slowly scaling, using rewards for going in side it, with and without us there but he simply never took to it without trying like hell to get out, would also soil himself while in. (broke one metal crate, bent the hell out of another, he's about 50lbs). I've never been a fan of crating dogs anyhow.
He generally can't be trusted alone, even for a short amount of time as he tends to get into the trash, or even into the closed pantry where he drags things off the shelves.
While not a glutton for affection, he's much a people puppy, he follows us from room to room and always sleeps nearby. He's generally well behaved when he's around people, within puppy parameters, he's a little over a year and a half now.
