Feeding your dog at scheduled times will help with knowing when the dog really needs to go out for a potty break. Also, dogs that are free fed tend to become obese over time.

A schedule will definitely help if he's not housebroken yet. If they eat at the same times every day, they'll probably poop at the same times every day! ;) I had a dog that pretty much put herself on a schedule (she was free-fed, but normally ate only a couple times a day at certain times), but most dogs will just graze throughout the day and overeat. It's also easier to note any changes in eating habits if they're on a schedule.

My pup gets fed at 7am, 1pm, and 6pm. Pretty easy to do, since that's roughly the same "schedule" I'm on, anyway.
