Hi all,

Just wanted to confirm that fruits are OK to feed to our pup.
He seems to have a bit of the runs today and shortly after some cherries yesterday and a nectarine... ( no pits of course ).

Also, he doesn't seem to feel good today as he feels tired and whinning :(

Is it because of the fruits?

Thx!
John

Small amounts of fruit mixed in with their regular meal is good. Too much and they can get the runs. Acidic fruits can also cause nausea so use those sparingly. I add slices of bananas, apples, etc. fairly regularly.

Cherries without pits and pieces of peaches/nectarines are excellent as treats for adult dogs. As with all treats, we don't feed so much as to disrupt their regular - hopefully balanced - diet.

Puppies are a different matter. Their digestive system is not fully mature and they are very sensitive to any change or additions to their diet. Changes- if any- must be made slowly and with a lot of attention to the amount fed.

Dietary changes that are too abrupt usually show up as vomiting and/or diarrhea. But I would not rule out mood changes in a puppy due to an abrupt change in diet.

Specifically avoid grapes and raisens and apple seeds, as well as the pits from any fruit.
